Powerful Paragraphs I — New!
Who is eligible? All students in grades 6-10 who have the ability to write grammatically correct paragraphs and who can type their weekly assignments.
When is it? 2nd, 3rd, (and sometimes 4th) Thursdays, beginning in October, from 2:30-3:30 PM on the following dates in fall 2010:

Who teaches it? Mrs. Tina Holmsten
Mrs. Holmsten is a long-time TG parent of three TG members. She has been active in teaching at the Training Ground, as well, including Park Games, running club, writing classes, science labs, and substituting for Spanish.
About the course: This is an expository writing class, based on a book called Writing Powerful Paragraphs by Victor Pellegrino.
Each week in class, students will learn how to write one of the 30 different types of paragraphs presented in this book. These types include paragraphs focused on chronology, physical or process analysis, classification, enumeration, cause and effect, dialogue, anecdotes, introductions, conclusions, transitions, and more.
**Each meeting will be structured as follows:
- Discuss last week’s assignment and listen to student volunteers read their paragraphs aloud (20 minutes)
- Collect student assignments for evaluation and grading
- Explain new paragraph format (10 minutes)
- Read, discuss and analyze sample paragraph (10 minutes)
- Write a class paragraph together on white board (15 minutes)
- Explain this week’s homework assignment (5 minutes)
