Course Detail
Odyssey of the Mind – Spring 2010
Who is eligible? Grades 9-12 can join the OM team. We are looking for a fifth team member to attend Thursday evening practices and the competitions, but he/she would not be required to come on Tuesdays.
When is it? We will be meeting on Tuesdays from 12:45-3:45 from Jan 5th until the day of Regional Competition in Pittsford on Saturday, March 6, 2010. We will also be practicing “Spontaneous” with the Pittsford teams on Thursday evenings at Thornell Elementary School on Thornell Road.
There is a chance, even with a first year team, that we will advance to the State Finals, which will be held at Binghamton University on Saturday, March 27, 2010. Should this occur, we will continue to meet on Tuesdays to practice and rebuild the structure.
Tuesday Meeting dates at the TG are as follows (on dates with an * , the class will meet in the TG upstairs studio instead of the main meeting room). Please refer to any emails from Mrs Hoselton for your Thursday meeting dates off-site.

Who teaches it? Mrs. Riley Hoselton
Odyssey of the Mind is being coached by Riley Hoselton who is the wife of Drew and the mother of Randon (13) and Dane (12). She has a Masters Degree in Biology and had taught for eight years in private Christian schools prior to homeschooling. Her experience with OM is limited to Randon’s experience last year participating on a Div II Pittsford team and advancing to the State Finals. However, as the coach, her main job is facilitation. The research, construction and motivation will come from within the team as they attempt to solve this year’s problem
About the course: OM is a national program that emphasizes team building and creative problem solving. Please refer to the website www.odysseyofthemind.com. Click on Learn More and be sure to click on More Information at the bottom of any pages that you use. We are division III and are doing Problem 4 Column Structure listed under Problem Synopses on the menu bar.
There are two parts to any OM competition. The first is called “Spontaneous” and includes verbal and/or “hands on” situations that need to be solved spontaneously by team members prior to and independently from the actual Problem. The second part is the “Long-Term Problem”, which, in our case, is to build a structure or structures that will hold as much weight as possible. In addition, the testing of the structure is required to be incorporated into a performance.
We are looking for a 5th team member! While we would very much like this fifth member to attend the Tuesday practices, it is not required. What we really need is someone who will be able to attend the Thursday evening Spontaneous practices at Thornell Elementary and who will be available to help place the weights on the structure the day of the performance(s). There will be a $50 fee for this person for second semester.
We will be using the main room and studio.
How much does it cost? $50 for a new team member; no new fee for current OM members
What does it include? Coaching; teambuilding; age-appropriate challenges for problem-solving.
What do I need to bring? Commitment to the team and solving the problems and creative challenges for competition.
Students may choose to spend some time at home doing research, skit practice, and construction.
Dress Code Exceptions: None
When do I need to register?:
Other notes:
There may be exceptions to the dress code on the days that the students choose to work in the studio on props or construction.
IMPORTANT -Please NOTE that the State Competition date is a conflict with TG mandatory Drama rehearsal for the spring production; please do not plan to have a role in Drama Cast or Crew if you participate in OM—keep the date open in case the team advances to State!)
