Location
The center is located on Route 96 (Pittsford-Victor Road) in Bushnell’s Basin, an historic Erie Canal village in the suburbs of Rochester, NY. Our building (c. 1839) is one of several in the area that have undergone restoration, in an area on the canal informally referred to as Canal Walk, just south of Thornell Road. The Training Ground’s original building provides the main meeting rooms for students, and the newly built office adjacent to it is for staff meetings and administrative work.
The enrichment center is in a wonderful location for errands or visiting with other parents: Finger Lakes Coffee Roasters and Abbot’s Frozen Custard are right next door; Eckerds, Tom Wahl’s, Bruegger’s and Subway are in the village; and Eastview Mall is just south on 96. The center is also close to the Southeast Family YMCA in Pittsford, the Pittsford Library, and, of course, the canal shops and towpath. There is a park nearby with playground and courts around the corner on Kreag Road.
Directions
From 490, exit at Bushnell’s Basin (Route 96). Turn right at the light onto Route 96, and pass through two more lights before turning into the parking lot at Abbott’s Custard and the other red-painted shops and eateries at Canal Walk. The parking lot is a U shape with a marked entrance and exit. Take the brick walkway past Finger Lakes Coffee Roasters to the Training Ground.
From Pittsford, take Route 96 east/south to Bushnell’s Basin. Immediately upon entering the village, you will see The Training Ground building on your left. Continue to the second driveway on your left. This is the entrance to the U-shape parking lot with a marked entrance and exit. Take the brick walkway past Finger Lakes Coffee Roasters to the Training Ground.
From points west, take Thornell Road to Pittsford-Victor Road (Route 96) and turn right. Immediately upon entering the village, you will see The Training Ground building on your left. From Farmington or Victor, take Route 96 west/north past Eastview Mall to Bushnell’s Basin. After passing through the traffic light at Kreag Road in the village, continue through one more light before turning into the parking lot at Abbott’s Custard and the other red-painted shops and eateries at Canal Walk. The parking lot is a U shape with a marked entrance and exit. Take the brick walkway past Finger Lakes Coffee Roasters to the Training Ground.
Parking
The parking lot at Canal Walk is a U shape. Please be careful that you enter and exit the parking lot at the areas marked specifically “entrance” and “exit” only. There is no official parking in front of The Training Ground. Do not park along Route 96! Also, please do not park in the Eckerd’s lot when visiting our center. We want to be above reproach in our neighborhood!
Hours
The Training Ground offers its facility and programs on a drop-off basis on most weekday afternoons from 1-4 P.M. Attendance at the center and its activities, except for the Grand Open House, will be by appointment or registration only. Please call Becky at 585-381-7250 for an appointment, tour, or room reservation; or members can view our calendar and course descriptions on this website to register for a class.
There is no guarantee that walk-ins will find the center open or resources available without an appointment. However, if you are in the area, feel free to ring the bell.
